Groo: The Hogs of Horder #2 (Dark Horse Comics)
Sergio Aragones & Mark Evanier

As Groo’s trail of destruction runs from one kingdom to another, the people of Horder decide to begin moving their manufacturing to the town of Khitan, where it is much cheaper to build. As the jobs dry up and the goods become even more expensive, Groo himself continues to wander around causing destruction. This book is kind of sad to read. I’ve been a fan of Groo for many, many years, and some light satire has always been part of the charm. The last couple of projects have gotten so heavy-handed, however, that the joy is being drained out of the book. Even when you basically agree with the position being espoused, it’s never fun to feel like you’re being preached to, and that’s what I’m getting out of this miniseries. The art is still wonderful, and the scripting is still sharp, but the subtext is overwhelming. It’s too late for this miniseries, but when the time comes to dust off Groo once again, I really hope Aragones and Evanier leave the commentary aside and just have fun with it again. I really miss that.
