Zorro #3 (Dynamite Entertainment)
By Matt Wagner & Francesco Francavilla

Matt Wagner‘s retelling of the origin of Zorro continues this issue as young Diego sets sail from California to Barcelona, where the greatest teacher of his life awaits him. There are still parts of this book I’m not really sold on, but fortunately, the stuff I like is more than making up for it. Seeing Diego slowly being tempered into a hero is good stuff, and the Latin American flavor of Francavilla‘s artwork has really begun to grow on me. It’s not quite conventional, but it really feels like the right fit for this character. The framing sequence, however, where a band of corrupt soldiers are being terrorized by an adult Zorro in the night, seems pretty superfluous. This is the part we already know, after all. Seeing the results of his strikes would work fine if that’s what the story was about, but it really doesn’t feel like it adds anything here. Still, I’m enjoying this book quite a bit.
